Ceriops tagal

Ceriops tagal is a small tree with a distinctive root growth. It´s a compact branched tree with thin breathing roots.

It occurs in estuaries, swamps and lagoons in the coastal areas.

Ceriops tagal was once used as a source of tannins and dyes. Nowadays it is still used as a source of these products and as well as medicines, once numerous applications in traditional medicine have been reported.

Bruguiera gymnorrhiza

Bruguiera gymnorrhiza is an evergreen tree with many pneumatophores roots. It grows on the coats and estuaries in mud, in places well-watered.

It is one of the most widely distributed trees in the tropics.

Bruguiera gymnorrhiza wood is known for being waterproof, resistant and tough. It has been used for timber and the bark is high in tannins, so it has also been used for tanning.

Avicennia marina

White mangrove is a small tree with extensive root system with 'pencil roots' (breathing roots). The leaves are able to excrete excess salt through pores; consequently salt crystals are frequently present on the leaves.

Avicennia marina is found in sandy shores, estuaries and mud banks. It is a multipurpose tree; it is used in traditional medicine, for preventing coastal erosion and as a source of tannin. It is threatened by the loss of mangrove habitat throughout its range, primarily due to extraction and coastal development, and there has been an estimated 21% decline in mangrove area within this species range since 1980.
